The National Directorate of Water Resources Management has issued a high alert concerning water flows in the Licungo River basin in Zambézia.
The Licungo basin is presently almost at the limit of its capacity, and any further rainfall could cause waters there to overflow, giving rise to flooding.
The Head of the Department of Water Resources, Agostinho Vilanculos, has warned people to withdraw from the vicinity of watercourses in the centre of the country because of especially heavy rainfall.
The National Meteorological Institute (INAM) indicates that provinces in the centre of the country will continue to have rain and thunderstorms.
The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) has reported that 12,000 families have been affected across Mozambique since the beginning of the rainy season.
