A woman living in the Ndlavela neighbourhood in Matola, Maputo province, poured hot water on her two fatherless nephews causing serious burns after they had eaten some food without permission. One of the children was hospitalised as a result.
The two youngsters had lost their father only last week, and he has not yet been buried.
The episode caused pandemonium in the block of flats where the woman lives, with residents demanding her expulsion and accusing her of mistreating her husband also.
The accused woman refused to say a word to the press, but police spokesman Emidio Mabunda confirmed that the two were the woman’s deceased brother’s children and had been living with her since December last year after being abandoned by their mother in South Africa.
According to Mabunda, the water used was deliberately heated on an electric stove. “We rescued the children and at the moment they are in an orphanage i Matola,” he said. The accused woman is in police custody.
Maltreatment of children by parents and guardians, including burning, is reported across the country on a regular basis.
A man living Beira city’s Vaz neighbourhood in Sofala province burned the hand of his 5-year-old daughter for supposedly stealing a fish in his absence in June this year. The victim had allegedly suffered other mistreatment at the hands of her father.
In Maputo, a woman was recently taken into custody on charges of pressing a hot iron on the body of a 10-year-old who was involved in an altercation with her daughter.
