The Municipality of Matola held its first business forum this Wednesday, focussing on digital transition to improve business environment, and seeking opportunities to leverage the tourism sector.
Entrepreneurs from different economic sectors and political leaders at various levels in the municipality and in the province of Maputo attended the forum.
Mayor of Matola Calisto Cossa said that debating the digital transition and improving the business environment in tourism would create bridges for inclusive development.
“We are sure that the use of information and communication technologies in our population aims to adapt control and greater fidelity to information related to our administration, but we also want to ensure better management of urban land,” Cossa said.
More than a thousand tourist resorts in Maputo province closed temporarily during the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving 1,500 people jobless.
Governor of Maputo Province, Júlio Parruque, wants businesspeople to be more involved. “To the municipality, which is here and will do and should do its part better, and to the private sector partners, we recommend that they invest heavily in this area. This is how Matola will become a smart city, which better serves everyone, in an integrated way,” Parruque said during the opening session of the event.
At the Business Forum, the Fund for Investment and Assets of Water Supply (FIPAG) and the Municipality of Matola signed a memorandum of understanding covering investments worth 50 million meticais, aimed at improving access to water and coverage levels over a two-year period, according to Castigo Álvaro, speaking on behalf of FIPAG.
“The growing challenge facing water supply in the Greater Maputo Metropolitan Region is likely to require additional management mechanisms, including community participation,” Álvaro said.
The Business Forum was held in the context of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the elevation of Matola to the status of city, itself marked by the inauguration of items of public and economic infrastructure.
