Sixteen instructors who allegedly sexually abused female trainees at the Matalana Police School in Marracuene district, Maputo province, have been transferred to other sectors within the corporation, Noticias reports this Thursday.
This was the measure the institution decided upon to get rid of the group of instructors who impregnated 11 trainees of the XI Basic Police Course, in a case which provoked widespread public debate when it came to light last year (2020), adds the same source.
‘Noticias’ has learned that there are indications that these (16) instructors in question continued to carry out similar acts in the course started last March (2021), which precipitated their transfer from the Escola Práctica de Matalane.

In addition to unwanted pregnancies, instances of sexual harassment and rape last year culminated in victims dropping out of the course.
The General Police Command also registered episodes of aggression against trainees, and last week decided to assign new instructors to the Matalane training facility.
Speaking at a parade at the Police Command of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), in Maputo city, Commander General of the Police Bernardino Rafael told the new Matalane instructors they had a responsibility to impose discipline and train staff to be able to respond to challenges to public order and security.

“Training is not mistreating the person; it is teaching how to assimilate knowledge, in order to apply it in the field. This is the essence of a trainer or instructor,” he said.
Bernardino Rafael said he hoped that the move would help the corporation in particular and Mozambican society in general to acquire exemplary cadres committed to the training of agents capable of guaranteeing public order, security and tranquillity.
