Mozambique’s main opposition party Renamo on Friday accused the country’s police and the ruling party Frelimo of preventing its list being presented in the municipality of Massinga in the south.
José Manteigas, the spokesperson of Renamo, said police officers and people wearing Frelimo t-shirts barred the access of a committee belonging to the main opposition party to the presentation of its party list for the elections taking place on October 10.
He added that their intention had been to provoke a confrontation and that Renamo members had avoided the heated situation.
Renamo and Frelimo fought a civil war for 16 years, which ended in a peace deal in 1992, but insurgency arose again in 2013. The Mozambique government and Renamo resumed talks last year.
The president of Mozambique announced on 6 August the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the government and Renamo about the demilitarisation and integration of the opposition fighters into the defence and security forces and police.
