The Massangena district government in Gaza has seized 1,000 tree trunks abandoned in forests there, whose owners are still unknown.
The logs are of the Chacate Preto species, also known as Black Chacate or False Mopane, a forest resource of high commercial value in national and international markets
Massangena district administrator Sancho Humbana said that an assessment of the volume of wood and its consequent monetary value – an amount in which the state would be harmed by such unauthorised felling – was ongoing.
Humbana said it was possible that the trees had been felled by a network of illegal loggers dedicated to smuggling forest resources in connivance with local authorities, and gave assurances that exhaustive investigation was underway to identify all those involved.
