Authorities yesterday incinerated the carcass of the whale washed up on the beach at Nandza, Marracuene district, Maputo province.
The whale meat, or “Kala vanga heti”, as it is locally known – a term that roughly translates into “something that does not end” – was eaten prolifically by the residents of Machubo in Marracuene district.
But, because it was never-ending, it was also fast deteriorating. So, in order to preserve the health of the local population, the authorities proceeded with the incineration.
Among some communities in the south of the country, it is believed that whales, in the final stretch of the year, approach coastal areas to allow themselves to be consumed, as a gift from the festive season. They then magically return, whole, to the sea.
The cause of this particular whale’s death remains unknown.
