Maritime security to top agenda of Narendra Modi’s visit to Africa

Reuters (File photo) / When Modi visits these countries, he is expected to talk about enhancing India’s participation in the maritime security with not only these countries but the region as well, sources said.

Maritime security will top PM Narendra Modi’s agenda during his Africa visit starting July 7.

India has been developing maritime security with countries including Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa by offering them not only capacity building but giving training to their officers as well. When Modi visits these countries, he is expected to talk about enhancing India’s participation in the maritime security with not only these countries but the region as well, sources said.

Anil Trigunayat (retd), former ambassador of India to Jordan, Libya and Malta, told FE, “Radicalisation, terrorism and piracy have afflicted both India and Africa for decades and India has become a major power to deal with the menace of piracy in Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Guinea and Indian Ocean. Hence, cooperation in countering and combating radicalisation and terrorism and anti-piracy preparedness and campaign could provide another new dimension to the relationship, especially in the context of maritime security.”
