The Assembly of the Republic (AR), the Portuguese parliament, approved on Wednesday (18) the request for the Portuguese head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to travel to Mozambique for the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of independence, which will be celebrated on June 25, but with votes against from the Liberal Initiative (IL).
In the current legislature, the IL is the fourth political force in the AR with nine deputies.
In a letter sent to the Assembly of the Republic, dated June 6, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says that he has planned a “trip to Mozambique from June 23 to 26”, at the invitation of his Mozambican counterpart, Daniel Chapo, “for the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of independence”.
On January 15 of this year, after Daniel Chapo was sworn in as the fifth President of Mozambique, which he missed, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa sent a message to the new Mozambican head of state expressing “reinforced commitment” to cooperation between the two countries. In this letter to Daniel Chapo, the Portuguese President said he hoped that the “legitimate aspirations of various political and social sectors” in Mozambique could be fulfilled, while “safeguarding pluralism and inclusive community dialogue”.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa assured “all Mozambicans that they can always count on the Portuguese and on Portugal” and reiterated that he hoped “to be present, next June, at the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Mozambique’s independence”. Portugal was represented at the swearing-in ceremony of Daniel Chapo as President of Mozambique by the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel.
