Notícias / The new and much awaited market is located in the Albasine neighbourhood and its delivery has been postponed more than once
Maputo’s new Albasine vegetable market will open in March, after repeated delays in construction.
The market is one of a number of projects initiated by Maputo municipal council to celebrate the city’s 128th birthday, and should have opened last year. Construction was held up by the occupation of designated land by vendors and merchants operating without municipal consent.
Maputo councillor for markets and fairs, Orlanda Fonseca, said that works were in their final phase, and include the completion of public toilets, plastering the walls, erecting a perimeter fence and laying foundations for the stalls.
“[The facility] should have been delivered on the Day of Maputo City, a deadline that was extended to last December. We hope that the constructor will finish it in the shortest possible time,” Fonseca said.
Fonseca added that the market is designed to handle most of the vegetables produced in the area, the Ka Mavota township having agriculture as a major income-generating activity.
The construction of the market was financed under the participatory budget, with Albasine residents themselves choosing the project as one of the local population’s key infrastructure priorities.
Participatory budgeting aims to involve residents in identifying and solving their own problems, participating with the city council in decision-making about development in the neighbourhoods they live in.
Among the projects routinely chosen by the public are the rehabilitation and maintenance of access roads, water supply and the rehabilitation of public infrastructure.
