Mozambique: State wants domestic medicine production to reduce dependency

Work on the Avenue Julius Nyerere in Maputo has resumed after the holidays, and the contractor has promised to deliver the finished project in late May.
Vidigal Rodrigues, Director of Municipal Infrastructure, told Noticias that the deadline for completion is now May and not February as originally planned, due to repairs the contractor has had to make to the asphalt.
Earthworks and preparation are underway from the Nó das Palmeiras detour to the Maputo Private Hospital to the second crater opened by rains. From there to the Mucoriane market, the road is already paved.
In tandem with preparations for tarring the road in Xikhelene, Gabriel Couto, the new contractor, is also is attending to the bumpy road surface between the Praça do Destacamento Feminino and the Nó das Palmeiras, the only part of the road delivered by former contractor Britalar.
The reconstruction of the road, an important link between ?Maputo-Cimento’ (the so-called ‘cement’ area of the brick built central city) and the other neighbourhoods in the capital, resumed last July under the auspices of Mozambican construction company Gabriel Couto after the city council terminated its contract with the Britalar-led consortium. The Maputo municipality contract is worth around US$6.9 million.
There is huge expectation around seeing the reconstruction of road finally completed and the road passable 15 years after the damage caused by the 2000 rains. Reconstruction started in 2011, with completion expected in 2012. The deadline was repeatedly extended until the municipality terminated the agreement with the contractor last year.
The Destacamento Feminino to Palmar Knot interchange section was in fact delivered in May 2013, the original deadline for the whole project. But after its opening to traffic the completed section of highway started to disintegrate, leading the developer to order the contractors to rebuild it, work which in the event never took place.
