Maputo/Catembe Bridge construction workers fired arbitrarily

Workers on the Maputo/Katembe Bridge are complaining of numerous cases of unfair dismissal.
According to officials who spoke to Folha de Maputo on condition of anonymity, workers injured at work and hospitalized are summarily dismissed.
“Employees are dismissed without notice or cause and not compensated for it,” reported one of the employees.
Another worker said that they were sometimes subjected to ill-treatment. “The Chinese beat us up but they had a warning and stopped.”
Workers said they often had to work without masks and gloves, at serious risk to their health, especially as the nature of the work involved high levels of dust.
