“Tuk-tuk” or “txopela” drivers in Maputo went on strike on Tuesday and instead of working amassed in protest in front of the municipal council building.
The motorcycle taxi drivers were protesting at alleged irregularities by the municipal police, especially the imposition of heavy fines for not having a license and alleged extortion by other city council agents.
Responding to their concerns, municipal police spokesman Joshua Lai rebutted all allegations and said that the taxi drivers need only legalise their situation to ply their trade freely.
