Maputo to have vegetables sales units – Deputy Minister of Trade

The government is to set up dedicated vegetable markets in Maputo, as a way of improving conditions in the sale of fresh produce in the capital.

Speaking during the visit to Zimpeto wholesale market, the largest in the country, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Ragendra de Sousa said the initiative would persuade informal vendors to abandon the sale of vegetables in inappropriate places, ending health risks to consumers.

The deputy minister took the opportunity to express his satisfaction with the degree of product supply and price stability as Christmas and the end-of-year festive season approaches.

De Sousa visited the AFRIGOTEL facilities, a cold logistics company belonging to the Sintagma Holding Group, which has 13 cold rooms currently with 50 percent occupancy rates, citing it as a solution to the chronic problems in the market for fresh produce which are then reflected in price oscillation

“The lack of means of conservation makes prices unstable, but this solution allows a producer to keep, say, tomatoes for longer and thus stabilise the price,” de Sousa said.

“The cold complex can increase the shelf life of perishable products, as in the case of fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, among others, and at the same time act as a market stabiliser,” he said.
