Following a demonstration by about 4,000 workers which brought work on the Maputo-KaTembe bridge to a halt, the management of the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CBRC), the company responsible for building the bridge, met the workers to find a solution to their concerns, O País reported on Friday, July 20.
The talks however failed to reach any consensus and Maputo Sul, the owner of the Maputo-Katembe Bridge, then intervened.
The meeting with the workers was productive, with the larger part of their concerns addressed, Maputo Sul chairman Silva Magaia said, and work would return to normal today (Monday).
The workers say they are not completely satisfied, but that the consensus reached would allow them to resume activities on Monday.
“We are satisfied with 50 percent: the company has promised to pay 30-days’ notice in case of redundancies of employees who have been working for more than a year, but did not respond to the risk subsidy issue,” workers representative Eduardo Manuel said.
The Maputo-KaTembe bridge is reaching the final phase of completion and will be officially opened soon, on a date yet to be announced.
