Construction work on stalls for informal vendors from downtown Maputo has recently started at the Transmitter Centre [Centro Transmissor] in Laulane neighbourhood, in Maputo city.
The space belongs to Mozambique Airports, but has been allocated to Maputo Municipal Council to build a market.
The first phase is designed to host second-hand clothes businesses, known as “calamidade” because they allege that existing stalls in municipal markets are not well-suited to their line of business.
Firmino João, director of Markets and Fairs for Maputo municipality, said that a space had been demarcated and divided into six blocks, and the construction of more than 960 stalls adapted to the sale of clothes was already under way.
He added, without revealing details of the budget allocated to the project, that the city council would ensure that the new market had essential business services such as toilets and water and energy supply.
João meanwhile appealed to other informal vendors, especially of vegetables, to occupy the stalls available in municipal markets.
