An unidentified individual died last night in another car chase in Maputo, shot by police after failing to stop as requested.
A Verdade reports that four youths were driving erratically on Avenida July 24 when they were ordered to stop by a police team.
Instead, they tried to escape by driving at speed against the flow of traffic along Avenida Salvador Allende towards Avenida Agostinho Neto.
One of the car’s occupants then opened fire on the police, leading to an exchange of shots which caused panic in the vicinity.
On the Av Salvador Allende, having crossed the Avenida Eduardo Mondlane, the driver was hit and lost control of the car, which hit a wall near the corner of the avenues Salvador Allende and Agostinho Neto and caught fire.
Two members of the group were arrested, but the fate of the fourth person has proved impossible to ascertain, as was also the reaction of the authorities to the incident.
