The Maputo Ring Road has its first pedestrian bridge. The bridge was built near the Chiango Primary School on the orders of the president in response to the high rate of road accidents.
The place that for more than a month was the scene of protests by Chiango Elementary School students’ parents now presents a different picture.
During his visit to the location, President Nyusi promised a bridge within 45 days.
The bridge is six metres high and has 47 steps plus a ramp for wheelchair circulation.
The people who petitioned for the bridge have expressed their thanks, and the managing board of the school that saw its pupils dying on the road, their relief.
To further strengthen safety, the school is to erect a perimeter fence soon.
