Mozambique: ACLED estimates 8-year Cabo Delgado death toll at 6,257

The Mozambican government is calling for water saving in the region of the capital, Maputo, because of low water levels in the Pequenos Libombos dam, which last month dropped from 20.14 to 19.8 percent full, according to figures consulted by Lusa.
The state of the reservoir reflects the below-average rainfall recorded during the current rainy season, which runs from October to April in most of southern Africa.
“With the exception of Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces in northern Mozambique, rainfall in the Southern Africa region is 30 percent below its long-term average,” the latest report of the United Nations World Food Programme reports.
According to the document, forecasts indicate higher rainfall for the rest of the rainy season (until the end of April), which may bring figures closer to the average for the period.
Until such forecasts are confirmed, authorities are calling for restrictions, for example of lawn watering, and the National Directorate for Water Resources has announced that it is surveying alternative sources of supply for Maputo’s water system.
