Frelimo in Maputo, the Mozambican capital, believes that poor attendance at the demonstrations called some days ago by various civil society organisations demonstrates the public’s commitment to the path of peace and development.
Speaking on Friday at the opening of Frelimo’s Maputo committee session, Frelimo first secretary Francisco Mabjaia said that citizens had acted maturely by not heeding opposition parties’ and civil society organisations’ “attempts to disrupt the normal course of life”.
“By not attending such events, our city’s residents confirm, once again, their commitment to peace and development and their alignment with Frelimo,” he said.
Mabjaia again rejected main opposition party Renamo’s “bellicose behaviour” that had claimed the lives of defenceless civilians and wantonly destroyed property across the country.
“We appeal to Afonso Dhlakama to hear the voice of the people who want to develop this country. Listen to the voice of our children who want to study and grow up in peace. Let him hear the voice of reason,” he said.
According to Mabjaia, members of Frelimo should celebrate the changes that Mozambique’s ruling party had undergone since its foundation in 1962, and broadcast Frelimo’s role in the organisation of the state and society, especially on issues such as peace, the current economic crisis and public debt.
“Let us continue to increase production and productivity in order to minimise the effects of destruction, the pillaging resources and the global crisis which afflict our country,” Mabjaia said, pointing out the part that drought and floods had played in disrupting the social and economic life of Mozambicans.
Mabjaia reported that, in six months, Frelimo had attracted about 2,300 new members, creating 267 new cells and five circle committees.
Frelimo’s ninth ordinary session, which usually extends over two days, is a bi-annual meeting held to discuss internal reports and reports from the Maputo Municipal Council and the Government of the City of Maputo, as well as presenting plans for accessibility and mobility in the capital.
