The public transport crisis in Maputo intensified yesterday with around 500 Municipal Public Transport Company of Maputo (EMTPM) workers going on indefinite strike, leaving commuters in Maputo, Matola, Boane and Marracuene without transport.
Workers are alleging various irregularities, including arbitrary deductions and non-payment of subsidies. They are also disputing the dismissal of ten workers who were involved in the previous strike.
Company management told O País that the strike was illegal because the workers had not followed legal procedure. The company however acknowledged the gravity of the situation, and said that it was making every effort to restore the confidence of its workers.
According to the management, the stoppage has already caused heavy losses, with the company losing 300,000 meticais a day in fare revenue.
