Thieves in Maputo province are using a new technique to steal cars, Maputo province police spokesman Emidio Mabunda revealed yesterday at the force’s regular weekly news briefing.
They have now taken to wheeling cars silently out of yards in the dead of night, only ‘hot-wiring’ them when they are out in the street, so that owners only realise the theft at dawn.
In most cases, the vehicles are then used to carry out further crimes.
Three people have been detained in Maputo province since the weekend, suspected of involvement in the theft of vehicles. From January to date 37 cars were reported stolen, of which 30 been have recovered and returned to their rightful owners on presentation of appropriate supporting documentation.
