Mozambique: Two shot dead in Matola - Watch
The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Maputo province has seized control of a field of cannabis sativa, known locally as “suruma”, in Changalane, Namaacha district.
About four hectares of cultivation was deactivated in an operation to combat the sale and consumption of narcotics.
The identity of the plantation’s owners is not yet known.
Sernic spokesperson for Maputo, Henrique Mendes, says that the size of the production area indicates that this is an organised crime operation.
Mendes clarified that the discovery of the site resulted from the collaboration of citizens reporting its existence to the authorities.
Mendes however underlined that the market for which the product was destined was still unknown.
Sernic in Maputo province has recently been tightening the noose on the sale and consumption of drugs in the region, resulting in the mass arrest of offenders.
