Rampant elephant movement in the Boane and Namaacha districts in Maputo province are leaving the population in panic, Rádio Moçambique reports today.
A total of 13 elephants have been circulating in several of these districts’ neighbourhoods since Saturday.
The animals have already destroyed extensive cassava farming areas and large areas of the Kurula irrigation system in Namaacha district.
The secretary of the Filipe Samuel Magaia neighbourhood in Boane, Leita Macuácia, says the situation is worrying. “Not in the houses yet, only in the fields. At around 6 p.m. the elephants are already coming in. The only thing we have been doing is lighting a fire, beating the drums and screaming. This is almost every day,” she said.
Boane’s municipal area has not escaped the fury of the elephants either. Mayor Jacinto Loureiro said that measures are already underway to scare the animals away.
