More than 40 industrial units in Maputo province – factories which have been paralysed for over ten years – urgently need financial intervention for their revitalisation.
Speaking at a seminar on the potential of this part of the country, Governor of Maputo province Júlio Parruque explained that the requalification of the fallow industrial plants aims, among other goals, to reduce imports of products and services.
“A positive aspect to highlight is the fact that Maputo province has trained human capital and is able to respond to the challenges and needs of industry,” he said.
Governor Parruque was extolling the potential of Maputo province at the Maputo International Fair (FACIM), which takes place in Ricatla, in the district of Marracuene.
He noted that Mozambique imports nearly US$15 million worth of tyres, while the Mabor factory lies idle, and cited the glass industry as another strategic sector.
“We import glass, while our own glassmaker is paralysed. In fact, on Avenida das Indústrias, where the factory is located, there are many factories that once contributed mightily to the country’s economy, but which ended up going bankrupt,” Parruque stressed.
Around 250 exhibiting companies from 19 countries are participating in person at this year’s hybrid-format FACIM.
