Governor of Maputo province Júlio Parruque directed ‘World Literacy Day’ celebrations, at provincial level, in Pochane, Bela Vista administrative post, Matutuine district.
Governor Parruque stressed that the 12% illiteracy rate in Maputo province, the lowest in the country, was little reason for celebration, but should rather stimulate determination to eliminate illiteracy, which stands at 39% at nationally.
He also said that youth and adult literacy was a priority for decentralised provincial governance, advocating for the involvement of everyone in the development process and arguing that “no-one should be left behind”.
At the event, the provincial governor urged the entire population, especially the most educated, to engage in the instruction of those who still lack basic skills such as reading, writing and elementary arithmetic.
Maputo province has, this year, 190 literacy and adult education centres, 339 literacy teachers and 6,515 literacy trainees, 3,919 of whom are women.
