The gale that lashed the city and province of Maputo in southern Mozambique on Monday last week caused damage estimated at 131 million meticais (about US$1.7 million).
According to Maurício Xerinda, director of the National Emergency Operating Centre (CENOE), the value of rebuilding housing, schools and health facilities is estimated at 60 million meticais.
The source, who spoke last weekend during a press conference in Maputo, said that state-owned Electricidade de Mozambique reported damages totalling more than 71 million meticais in destroyed electricity poles and other infrastructure.
“The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) has a contingency plan approved by the Council of Ministers. There is a budget for this type of situation covering the period from October until 2017,” the CENOE director said.
