Four people died over the weekend following heavy rains in Maputo province, southern Mozambique, the country’s National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) announced today.
INGC delegate Rocha Nuvunga told public radio station Rádio Moçambique that the four deaths were the result of being washed away, electrocution and being struck by lightning.
Nuvunga said that hundreds of families were displaced in the municipality of Matola, the capital of Maputo province, as a result of flooding which affected around 600 homes.
The National Meteorological Institute of Mozambique (INAM) is warning that it will continue to rain heavily in southern and central provinces of Mozambique over the next 24 hours.
Between the months of November and April, Mozambique is routinely hit by cyclonic winds from the Indian Ocean and floods originating in the river basins of Southern Africa.
A total of 54,909 people have already been affected in the current rainy season. Twelve have died since October, and another 53 injured in weather-related incidents, the National Institute for Disaster Management reports.
A total of 714 people died during the 2018/2019 rainy season, including 648 victims of cyclones Idai and Kenneth.
