Maputo province: Elephants crop-raid 70 hectares in Mavoco, Boane – Mozambique

Elephants are raiding crops in an area of around 70 hectares in Mavoco, Boane district, Maputo province, to an extent which is compromising the food security of villages in the region.

Close to 70 hectares of different crops have been razed by elephants that have been roaming for about a month in the village of Mavoko, Boane district, Maputo province.

This is leaving some peasants without food, agricultural production being their main source of livelihood.

[Usually, elephants feed on crops , while trampling the ones they don’t eat].

The population constantly attempt to scare the elephants away, a dangerous enterprise given the pachyderms’ capacity for causing harm.

While waiting for technicians from the fauna sector to appear with a solution, the constant battle with the elephants continues, one Mavoco village community leader told Radio Mozambique.

Armando Canhane suspects that these elephants have escaped from the Maputo National Park, formerly the Maputo Special Reserve.

Canhane also said that the pachyderms have not yet injured anybody, but continue to cause apprehension in the locality.
