Mozambique: Central bank predicts impact on access to credit after S&P downgrade - Watch

More than half of Mozambique’s industrial production was concentrated, in the first half of the year, in the province of Maputo, and 4% in the capital city, according to official data accessed by Lusa on Friday.
The execution report of the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE) from January to June 2023, reveals that, of the 66,813 million meticais (€991 million) of industrial production throughout the country, equivalent to 47,9% of what was planned for the entire year, 55.2% was supplied by units installed in Maputo province.
Furthermore, the city of Maputo, which is independent from the province of Maputo in the south of the country, guaranteed 4% of Mozambique’s industrial production in the first half of the year, worth 2,652 million meticais (€39.3 million), but in this case just 22.6% of what was planned for the entire year 2023.
This was followed by the province of Nampula, in the north of the country, with 15,905 million meticais (€236 million) and a weight of 23.8%, and Sofala, in the centre, with 7,166 million meticais (€106.3 million) and a weight of 10.7%.
Business industrial production in Mozambique in the first six months of the year was driven mainly “by the most important divisions”, namely basic metallurgy (36.6%), food (24.2%), beverages (14.8%) and non-metallic minerals (10.0%).
Among other sectors, the clothing industry recorded a production of 598 million meticais (€8.8 million), annual growth of around 13.7% compared to 2022.
From January to June this year, the provinces with the lowest weight in industrial production in Mozambique were Niassa and Inhambane, with 0.1% of the country’s total, according to the same document.
