About 42,000 farming families in Maputo province may face a food crisis following the loss of extensive areas of crops due to the intense rain there.
The families in Magude, Manhiça, Marracuene, Matutuíne and Boane districts saw their plantings devastated by heavy rainfall.
In view of the situation, the governor of Maputo province, Júlio Parruque, urged the Agriculture and Fisheries directorate to work with the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction, and make seed for replacement planting available to farmers as quickly as possible.
Agriculture is the main means of subsistence for more than 60% of communities in Maputo province.
