At least 268 patients under the influence of alcohol and drugs were treated in health units in Maputo province in the third quarter of the current year. The majority of patients (243) were between 15 and 40 years old.
The number of patients treated represents an increase compared with the same period last year, when 182 patients were recorded.
The information was made public yesterday by the Secretary of State in Maputo, Henriques Bongece, who noted that the increasing number of adolescents and young people consuming drugs and alcohol is a concern for the state.
Bongece was speaking at the provincial education conference on drug and alcohol consumption among students in Boane district, Maputo province. The event is an initiative of the Externato Ideias Válidas school, aiming to find ways to eradicate drug and alcohol use in schools.
On the occasion, Bongece emphasised that schools are not the source of the problem, but they can and should be an essential part of the solution, as it is within schools that values are formed, awareness is raised, and paths are opened toward healthy and responsible choices.
