The Republic of Mozambique Police today arrested Rufino Licuco, who had been sentenced to pay a 200 million meticais compensation in a case of domestic violence against Josina Machel, daughter of Samora and Graça Machel.
Rofino Licuco had been sentenced last February to a suspended prison sentence of three years and four months, plus six months of fine at a daily rate of 175 meticais.
A the same time, the court also sentenced the defendant to pay compensation in the amount of 200,579.000 meticais, of which 200 million are aimed at repairing non-patrimonial damages – pain, depression, shame – and 579 thousand meticais correspond to material damages, namely the victim’s travel and treatment expenses.
Applying the alternative measures to prison, the sentence was suspended for a period of five years, provided that the defendant paid the compensation within 30 days and, at that time, the defence of the defendant did not agree with the decision and appealed the verdict.
According to the Canalmoz in its Facebook page, Rufino Licuco’s defence had filed a complaint against the judge because it had noticed the existence of two supposed sentences on the same case, which led the Superior Council of the Judiciary to open a process of investigation against Judge Marina Lubélia.
“Today, there was to take place a hearing to Rufino Licuco where he should give his version of the complaint he submitted against the judge. Only it was all a scheme. As soon as Licuco entered the courtroom, the police surrounded the premises and said that they had higher orders. All the arguments that the lawyer tried to wield were answered with ‘we are complying orders’,” writes CanalMoz.
