A mother who abandoned two newborn babies in a garbage container in Maputo’s Chapa Amarela neighbourhood early on Sunday morning is in police custody following a tip-off.
The tip-off came from the residence in the Bairro Ferroviário where the woman worked, after she turned up for work on Monday morning no longer pregnant.
The secretary of Hulene district A, José Tito Cossa, told Notícias yesterday that the young woman refused to speak after the arrest, so the root cause of her actions remains unclear.
It is known, however, that she worked in the area, between the Praça dos Combatentes and Hulene-Expresso in Maputo, where she abandoned the twin newborn boys.
Police spokesman Orlando Mudumane said that police could not give any further details, except that the suspect is being held in the Laulane 14th Police Station.
The newborns were discovered wrapped in a ‘capulana’ in the early hours of Sunday by a citizen who was throwing her garbage away.
This is not the first case of newborn abandonment where a tip-off has helped police arrest the protagonist.
This morning, Folha de Maputo reported that the detained young woman would have confessed to the crime, claiming that the two newborn babies were already dead when she threw them in the garbage container.
