Pilot bus lanes on major traffic routes in Maputo will come into operation on the 2nd of February. The initiative aims to allow public transport passengers more convenience during peak hours, from 5.30am to 8.30am in the morning and from 15.30pm to 19.00pm in the afternoon.
The project, initiated by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Municipal Council of Maputo, will oblige traffic in the Zimpeto-Baixa-Museu corridor to prioritize the movement of public transport using marked bus tracks during peak periods.
The left lanes of the Avenida de Moçambique, between the Missão Roque and former Brigada Montada, and of Avenues Organização da Unidade Africa (OUA), 24 de Julho and Guerra Popular will be dedicated exclusively to public passenger transport.
The Avenida of OUA lane will come into force between the Jose Macamo General Hospital and the Praça 16 de Junho. On the Avenida 24 de Julho, the bus lane will operate between Praça 16 de Junho and Museu.
Bus lanes will come into force on the Avenida Guerra Popular between the intersection with Av 24 de Julho and the former Laurentina beer factory.
The introduction of the bus lanes will coincide with the coming into operation of the 100 new privately-operated buses purchased in a public-private partnership between the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the private sector.
