Maputo City Municipal Council is starting an awareness campaign today which aims to persuade informal traders to leave the pavements and streets of the capital’s CBD and move to vacant stalls in the markets.
Municipal police spokesman Joshua Lai said the authorities would distribute pamphlets detailing the deadlines for informal vendors to seek out with empty market stalls.
The municipality even has a plan for those who cannot find space in existing markets.
“We are thinking of allocating sites on less busy streets, such as Bagamoyo Street,” he said, quoted by Noticias.
The vendors ply their trade in public spaces at risk to their own lives and to the detriment of the city’s aesthetics, Lai complains, Folha de Maputo adding that unregulated commercial activity also impedes both motorised and pedestrian traffic.
Street vendors also stand accused of being the source of the piles of rubbish which accumulate wherever they set up shop.
