Maputo Municipal Council yesterday took delivery of three new garbage trucks, valued at 26.8 million meticais [around US$420 thousand US dollars at current exchange rates], within the scope of strengthening solid waste collection capacity.
Municipal Inspector Roberto Salomão said that the vehicles would be used to collect solid waste.
In turn, the municipality’s Deputy Director of Environment and Health, Miriamo Novela, said that the acquisition of the new vehicles complies with the municipal government’s acknowledgement of its responsibility to ensure cleanliness and health in the country’s capital.
Novela pointed out that the investment would help ensure the provision of minimum services and improve the quality of garbage collection coverage across the city.
“The vehicles do not replace the outsourcing to private service providers who have been operating in the neighbourhoods, but to guarantee the continuity of services,” she stressed.
Novela also confirmed that that the municipality had, prior to the delivery of the new trucks, had only three vehicles available, two of which were operational and one of which was broken down.
