The Municipality of Maputo will spend over 10 million meticais [around 156,510 dollars at current exchange rates]on the capital’s Independence Day Festival, almost twice as much as that used to purchase motor pumps to alleviate the suffering of flood victims.
On Tuesday, June 25th, the country stops to celebrate Independence Day. In Maputo, the Independence Day Festival will put pressure on municipality accounts to the tune of more than 10 million meticais for various activities, including a music concert.
“The Festival has a wide range of activities, including a mega-show featuring around 30 important artists,” Councillor for Youth and Knowledge Creation, Nércio Duvane, told a press conference on Sunday.
According to the city council, the amount in question results from partnerships with renowned national companies.
“The event has great support from our partners. We are talking about a large structure, about our musicians who deserve a space to present their artistic creations. We are talking about structure in terms of stage and support. We will have stallholders, we will also have public toilets, we will have lighting, so there are several elements, and the Municipal Council is not alone [in organising this],” Councillor Duvane explains.
Asked about the rationale of using an amount such as this for a party while problems such as urban and road flooding persist, the city council responded that the municipality does not exist only to solve problems.
“The balance of a city also necessarily involves creating spaces for socializing, so that our families can also enjoy moments of leisure, moments of socialization and moments of cultural exchange,” he says.
The municipal celebrations of the 49th anniversary of National Independence will take place at Praça da Independência, from 10.00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.. Admission is free.
At the venue, there will also be opportunities to process documents, even for tax purposes.
