The FNB Maputo 10-kilometre ‘Corrida das Acácias’ took place on Sunday, November 5th, with a record participation of more than 4,000 people.
The competition, taking place for the fifth consecutive year, is part of celebrations of the City of Maputo month, celebrated annually on the 10th of November.
This year, the competition featured a new experience and a renewed challenge. The athletes completed a 10-kilometre route from the Portagem N2 in Matola, crossing the finish line in front of the Maputo City Council building on Av. Samora Machel.
For the president of the Maputo Municipal Council, Eneas Comiche, the competition contributed to raising awareness of the health benefits of taking part in sporting activity.
“In fact, it is a very healthy and extremely attractive initiative not only for residents, but also for people from other countries who are keen to participate, and that is very positive. I want to congratulate the organisation and the massive participation that this competition had,” Comiche said.
Executive Committee of FNB Mozambique member Sérgio Chitará said that the competition had achieved the purpose for which it was designed: to bring together thousands of people with the aim of encouraging the practice of sports and consequently, improving their quality of life.
“The Acácias Race is a competition that helps Maputo city dwellers adopt a healthier lifestyle, and I urge everyone to participate. The objectives were achieved, and this was only possible with the involvement of all partners,” Chitará observed.
This year’s edition featured a total of four categories: Federated, Popular, Veterans and Physically Disabled, each for both men and women.
Taking stock, FNB’s Marketing Director, Cláudia Chirindza, gives a positive assessment of recent innovations, starting with the route.
“Overall, it was a very good race,” Chirindza said. “We decided to bring something different in this, the fifth year of the competition. The first race took place over the Maputo-Katembe bridge and then, due to the pandemic, we had two editions in virtual format, returning to the bridge last year. This year, we changed the route and, without a doubt, we have a very positive assessment of the event. It is a race that has already earned its name and, as a result, has enormous prestige.”
This year, the FNB Maputo 10K, a race that has become a reference in the country’s capital, saw a record number of participants, with more than 4,000 registrations sold out in around 24 hours.
FNB Mozambique conceived this competition with the purpose of promoting culture and the practice of sporting activities.
The FNB Maputo 10K 2023 race saw the involvement of several partners, including the Maputo Municipal Council, Heineken, Hollard, Intercar, Southern Sun and Coca-Cola, in addition to TRAC and the Maputo City Athletics Association.
