At least 40 Maputo municipal market inspectors and administrators received training in preventing Covid-19 infection from health officials yesterday.
Health officials explained what the new coronavirus is, what its symptoms are, and how it can be transmitted from one person to another. Infection prevention measures were demonstrated.
Maputo municipality director of health area Hélder Muando pointed out that, since markets are places where people gather, it was important to disseminate instructions about the disease, so that managers could pass them on to users.
Muando noted that the first cases of Covid-19 were identified in a group of market traders in the city of Wuhan, in China.
“The risk of contamination is high in markets, as the virus can be transmitted through the handling of money,” he said. He however advised salespeople against wearing gloves, especially if they are not infected, since gloves can themselves be a transmission vector.
Zimpeto wholesale market administrator Ester Chombene said that awareness campaigns aimed at preventing the spread of the disease would be promoted among both traders and customers.
She added that the Zimpeto wholesale market was particularly vulnerable, since most of its suppliers are from South Africa, which has already confirmed some cases of the disease.
