The city of Maputo, in southern Mozambique, will continue to be subject to restrictions on the supply of drinking water due to the low level of storage at the Pequenos Libombos Dam, the Mozambican government said on Friday.
“As long as there is not enough rainfall, water will have to be used cautiously,” Council of Ministers spokeswoman Ana Comoana said at a press conference at the end of the Council of Ministers’ weekly session.
Comoana said the Pequenos Libombos Dam, in the southern Boane district, contained only 25.5 percent of its 400 million cubic metre water storage capacity. In addition to the Mozambican capital, drinking water supply restrictions will also affect the city of Matola, some 15 kilometres from Maputo, and the Boane district.
Comoana said that all other Mozambican reservoirs are more than 50 percent full. The severe drought affecting the south of the country has imposed water restrictions on the cities of Maputo and Matola and the district of Boane since last year.
