The inauguration of the bridge linking Maputo and Katembe may take place in October, Silva Magaia, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Maputo Sul, said in response to concerns expressed by Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário during his visit to the project exhibition at the Maputo International Trade Fair in Ricatla, Marracuene district, Maputo province.
Magaia said that the project should have been handed over a long time ago, but several factors had contributed to the delay, notably the refusal of two families to be resettled in order to let work in the vicinity of Praça 16 de Junho, Nwakakana, go ahead.
Magaia said that the resettlement had now taken place and the work was already at an advanced stage, with work on the three-kilometre-long bridge in its final stages, such as lighting and training of toll-gate personnel.
On the Maputo side, the road would continue to the Luís Cabral neighbourhood, which implies crossing National Road Number 1 (EN1), Magaia said.
