The number of automated teller machines (ATMs) in Mozambique has fallen almost 4% since the beginning of this year, to 1,489 at the end of August, and around a third of these are concentrated in the capital, Maputo.
According to a statistical report released today by the Bank of Mozambique, the country had 1,545 ATMs at the beginning of the year, of which 667 were in the province of Maputo, with 465 in the capital city alone.
At the end of August, of the 1,489 ATMs in operation in Mozambique, 635 were in the province of Maputo, followed by the cities of Nampula, with 95, and Beira, with 87.
By contrast, the provinces of Niassa and Cabo Delgado have the fewest ATMs available through banks, with just 64 and 79, respectively.
In August of this year, ATMs registered 4,609,989 transactions across the country, transacting 15,250 million meticais (€226.8 million).
In the same report, the Bank of Mozambique states that at the end of August the country had 33,462 automatic payment terminals (TPA/POS), of which 14,475 were in the city of Maputo, 7.3% fewer than in January. These terminals recorded 3,643,158 transactions in August, in purchases totalling more than 10,948 million meticais (€162.9 million).
At the end of August, Mozambican banks had 6,057,452 customers using ‘mobile banking’ services and 647,699 using ‘internet banking’.
According to the central bank, there are 15 commercial banks and 12 micro-banks operating in Mozambique, as well as a number of credit cooperatives and savings organisations.
