Maputo hosts a seminar on Chinese sustainable investment in Mozambique today, bringing together nearly 50 representatives of civil society conservation organizations, a press release announces.
The summit taking place in Beijing, organized by the World Wildlife Fund, is in preparation for the China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC) in September.
The seminar “will serve to reflect on strategies for civil society organizations participating in FOCAC to promote sustainable investment in Mozambique, with the aim of strengthening cooperation between these two countries,” the document says.
China is an important economic partner for Mozambique, but also one of the destinations for timber leaving the Mozambican territory illegally.
The program of the event also includes a debate on the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries last June, an instrument that will allow Mozambique to control the information on the volumes of timber leaving the country for China.
In 2017, Mozambique made one of the largest seizures of illegal timber in its history, when authorities found in the port of Beira one hundred containers with about two thousand cubic meters of timber destined for export during a merchandise inspection operation whose destination was China.
