Designers and creatives from various areas are in the Mozambican capital to display tgeir latest ideas. But the purpose of the second edition of “Maputo Fast Forward” is not only to stimulate innovation, but also to get closer to the market.
Innovation and creativity in the various visual arts are putting Maputo on the path of technological revolution. This is why creative artists and researchers from various fields are meeting for the second consecutive year in the Mozambican capital in an opportunity to display their artistic knowledge in the digital age.
Mozambican artist João Roxo is exhibiting his work, ‘Bits Maputo entre Acácias’, an audio-visual project composed of 20 photomontages. “A few years ago we started a project called ‘Anima’, which is a creative studio. I personally work in the field of design. My presentation is about the world economic situation, and the system of dependency created between the North and South,” he explains.
“It will basically be a proposal of a speculative, possible scenario of emancipation from this dependence through art, design and creativity,” he says.
Investing in tradition
Imagination led the Mozambican artist Tavares Cebola to research Africa’s oral tradition. “The opportunities that audio offers for the reproduction and dissemination of content are varied. I will associate this with the oral tradition in Africa, with particular emphasis on Mozambique, incorporating literacy and other issues,” he said.
Contact between artists allows us to draw new narratives and forge new routes, with the possibility of thinking about new projects and exhibitions. That is why Luís Teixeira, a Portuguese cultural programmer who was responsible for the programming of the Culturgest artistic foundation, is leading the festival towards new perspectives in the area of creative industries.
“What we do is to equip young creators who are good from the point of view of creating with the basics of how they can take their ideas and bring them to market, whether in more business projects or in cultural projects. One of the tools available is crowdfunding: electronic platforms that allow people to seek funds to finance their projects,” Teixeira says.
Mozambique as a cultural ecosystem
Raquel Nobre, one of the organisers of the event, says ‘Maputo Fast Forward’ intends to take the country further.
“First, [we] want to stimulate creativity and innovation in a variety of areas, be it art, culture, technology, architecture or design. The second objective is to stimulate and develop training in order to establish a true cultural and creative ecosystem in Mozambique,” she says.
‘Maputo Fast Forward’ takes place in the Mozambican capital from November 15 to December 16. During the 30 days there will be exhibitions, debates on the artistic and creative processes, and workshops on the cultural projects of various artists.
