A debate on the contemporary art market and the construction of artist’s market value in Mozambique will be held place at the Cine-Teatro Scala in Maputo on Wednesday, August 3.
The meeting, arranged by the Association for Cultural Development (Kulungwana), aims to raise awareness of the challenges facing cultural activities in Mozambique, and keynote speaker, academic Rui Trindade, will speak about the challenges of art’s dependence on market principles and new models of cultural consumption.
The aim of the initiative, which is the first of its kind to be held in the country, is to contribute to a reflection on the current state of the contemporary art market globally and help arts stakeholders in the country, from artists to galleries, collectors and cultural institutions, to position themselves in this context.
The debate will analyse and characterise the role of each of these players in the increasingly globalised art market as subject to complex marketing logic, in which the work of art is understood as a “financial asset”. The “economic value” of an artist then becomes a combination of variables that are established by interactions between the various players in “the art system”, including collectors, gallery owners, fairs and biennials, critics and art magazines.
The contemporary art market on the African continent will be in the spotlight, with special emphasis on countries such as South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya, where market structures already have significant presence. The idea is to allow artists, gallery owners, collectors and Mozambican cultural institutions to think about and put into perspective various forms of intervention in international markets.
In addition to Rui Trindade, professor and art collector Alda Costa, visual artist and gallery owner Pompilio Hilário Gemuce and artist Vasco Manhiça will also speak.
