Job seekers applying for vacancies at the City Council of Maputo crowded outside the Maputo Municipal Council building, without observing any Covid-19 social distancing measures.
In the search for opportunity, a queue more than 200 metres long formed – the very thing that the coronavirus does not allow.
Most of the young people, like João, were aware of the danger of contagion, but the dream of filling a vacancy left no option but to queue, some since the early hours of the morning.
Face masks were however evident among those waiting without any organisation on the sidewalks of avenues Olof Palma and Ho Chi Min.
Onlookers asking the reason for the gathering were surprised to hear about the job opportunities, and promptly joined the throng.
The Municipal Council says it has opened other viable ways to post applications for the 250 vacancies, and, minutes after our reporter arrived on the scene, the candidates were organised in strict compliance with the presidential state of emergency decree.
