Maputo Municipal Council is to issue permits for individual motorcycle taxi operators.
The weekly Domingo quotes Director of Transport and Traffic, Carlos Diante, as saying the city will only permit motorcycle taxi drivers to operate in designated places such as the terminal in Xiquelene on the Eduardo Mondlane University campus, the campus of the Pedagogical University and Maputo’s Marginal.
Municipal authorities are going “to boost surveillance of txopelas which operate on any street corner, undercutting municipal efforts and creating unfair competition with cab operators”.
“When the txopela service was created, it was meant for tourists, so in the beginning the city council created ten txoplela stands on the Marginal Avenue to transport tourists who wanted to circulate along that route,” Diante said.
In the beginning, the city only issued permits and licensing to motorcycle taxi drivers who were affiliated to firms which had a minimum of five txopelas, even if they didn’t have their own headquarters, and had their own areas of work.
