Mozambique: Waste pickers charge for passage along J. Nyerere Avenue
Voa / The fuel price hike has worsened the situation
As Mozambique’s capital groans under a widening public transport strike, the government is pressing forward with fuel price increases.
Long queues of passengers waiting hours for public transport to get home are a common site in Maputo. The expected buses don’t turn up, the solution in the end the so-called “My Love” private open box vans, out on the roads taking the opportunity to make some money.
Elements of this scenario are a daily occurrence, but this week is worse due to the shutdown of Maputo’s Municipal Transport Company, whose workers are on strike.
The situation worsened even further on Wednesday when the new fuel prices came into effect, causing many of the ‘Chapas’ minibuses to stay off the streets in an undeclared protest strike.
