Maputo City Council yesterday proposed that the new bridge over the bay bear the name “Maputo-Katembe”, Mayor David Simango has announced.
“It is the consensus of the House that the name Maputo-Katembe’ prevails,” he said just after the assembly’s 81st session. “Since the laying of the first stone for the construction of the infrastructure, the name Maputo-Katembe Bridge has been used, so this is a consensual decision,” he added.
Other names proposed for the bridge were: Eduardo Mondlane, founder and first president of the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo), the ruling party; Samora Machel, first president of independent Mozambique; and Katembe, the locality on the south side of the bay.
The final decision on the name rests with the Council of Ministers.
Construction of the bridge, about 200 kilometres of access roads between Maputo and Ponta do Ouro and five smaller bridges cost US$785 million, financed by a loan from China that delivers the project ready to use.
The foundations of the two main towers of the new bridge reach 100 metres in depth and the height of the deck will allow boats up to 60 metres to enter the port of Maputo.
The official inauguration of the bridge has not yet been scheduled, though some of the traffic lanes are already open.
